UART (VE.Direct): J7, J8, J9

The UART interface allows connection of serial devices (RS232).

The UART interface is galvanically isolated to prevent ground loops. It also features an integrated level shifter for automatic signal voltage adaptation.

Compatible Connectors: JST PH 2.0 4-pin

Level Shifter Operation

The integrated level shifter automatically adapts UART signals to different voltage levels (e.g., 3.3V, 5V, or 12V). The reference voltage of the connected device must be applied to the V+ pin. The level shifter then uses this voltage as a reference and converts the RX and TX signals accordingly:

  • V+ Pin: Apply the operating voltage of the external device here (typically 3.3V, 5V, or 12V)
  • RX and TX Signals: Automatically adjusted to the voltage level defined by V+
  • Galvanic Isolation: Protects both sides from ground loops and potential differences

This solution enables direct connection with devices of different voltage levels without additional external level shifters.

UART Port Pinout

The pinout is the same for all UART ports (J7, J8, J9):

Victron Energy

The interface is fully compatible with VE.Direct, so original VE.Direct cables from Victron Energy can be used. Among others, the following Victron Energy devices are compatible with the port:

  • SmartShunt
  • BMV
  • SmartSolar
  • BlueSolar

VE.Direct devices are automatically detected as soon as they are connected. They are integrated via the mppt or bmv driver.
